LIVE REVIEW: JUNGLE @ FESTIVAL HALL
As one of the 5,000 soggy Melbournians who shuffled into the historic Festival Hall to escape the relentless rain, I had no idea I was about to be part of an epic dance party. Anticipation was buzzing in the air as we awaited an explosive performance, as fiery and passionate as the namesake of Jungle's latest album, "Volcano."
The show kicked off with their iconic "Jungle" logo emblazoned in huge text behind the band, setting the stage for a night of pure energy. Each member, positioned behind their respective instrument, was bathed in warm red and orange hues, a visual nod to the celebratory tracks that were about to ignite the crowd. The stage transformed into a pulsating landscape of sound, with a live drummer, bongos, tambourine, guitar, bass guitar, keys, synth, and of course, those amazing falsetto style vocals washing over us.
Jungle's performance was the epitome of perfect dancing music. It wasn’t the frantic kind that demands constant jumping, but rather a smooth, step-tap vibe that had everyone grooving. Within just a few songs, even those in the seated sections were on their feet, swept up in the infectious rhythm.
The lighting was a visual journey of its own. The warm, fiery tones that framed the show gave way to colder green and blue hues midway through, highlighting some of their older, more electronic songs. But it was the clever use of silhouette lighting that truly set this performance apart. The dramatic contrast created a sense of mystery and intrigue, a visual representation of the band's evolution and depth.
The band's stage presence was electric, with each member exuding a raw energy that pulsed through the audience. For the last half hour, huge beach balls bounced through the crowd, adding a much-needed burst of fun and turning the venue into a giant dance floor. The use of sirens added an element of surprise, punctuating the music with unexpected bursts of sound.
Musically, the performance was rich and dynamic. While the pre-recorded brass sections were well-executed, the addition of live brass would have elevated the experience even further. The brief appearance of a live flute was a delightful touch, showcasing the band's musical versatility and hinting at the potential impact live brass could have had, particularly during the climactic points of the performance.
The night culminated in the audience demanding an encore, complete with a full drumroll and enthusiastic clapping. The band returned to the stage, fuelled by the crowd's energy, and delivered a final set that left us all breathless.
Overall, this was an incredible experience. Despite my initial apprehension about attending the concert alone, I found myself amidst a very respectful and fun audience, thoroughly enjoying every moment. Jungle delivered a show that was not only a refuge from the rain but a celebration of music, dance, and the raw power of live performance.
