SINGLE REVIEW: KIRKLANDD - SIIYE
Where has Kirklandd been all my life?
An established face in the Aussie pop rap scene, Kirklandd is thriving in this genre of trap-pop, and has slapped us in the face with this new track.
SIIYE is part of a trio of singles entitled ‘The Love Divide’.
Kirklandd is testing the waters with different influences like punk, trap and folk- where this single is actually inspired by Blink 182 (hell yes) and even Good Charlotte (bonus- but just listen out for them! You can absolutely hear these influences shine through).
There is no room for intro as Kirklandd drops straight into his narrative- they're so involved in their own conflict that there isn’t any room for resolving it- they keep fighting but they love each other so much that they can’t leave- or rather, that’s what I'm getting from this.
I just want to take a moment to acknowledge all of Kirklandd’s achievements thus far.
He won Groovin' the Moo triple j unearthed competition in 2019, was nominated in the National Live Music Awards for Best Live Act for Canberra, and has also (yes, also) landed a spot as a triple j unearthed featured artist.
He has performed on the festival stages of Spilt Milk, Groovin the Moo and NYE on the Hill. Is there any pivotal Australian Music rite of passage this young artist hasn't achieved yet? I’m not sure, but honestly I can’t wait to hear him on mainstream radio. Wouldn't that be something?
This ear worm of a track was produced by Cam Bluff- who has worked with industry heavyweights like Hilltop Hoods, Illy and Amy Shark- and I feel like this is a really great new start to a different angle of Kirklandd’s career. It’s unbelievable really! This isn’t really the sort of genre we find being produced in Australia at the moment, it's more underground at the moment and waiting for the right time to shine.
Because it’s more trap-based, I find that the beat isn’t as prominent because it doesn't need to be, so much. It’s main focus is the lyrics, wherein we are being yanked into the story that Kirklandd is writing out for us. It can find a place in the heart of anyone who is going through something similar- you’re fighting so much, and you can see the end is near, but neither one of you wants to take the inevitable step. Staying up late trying to work it out, not sleeping, that awful anxiety about the inevitable. You name it, I'm pretty sure we have literally all been there.
To be honest, this is a cracking start to what seems like a phenomenal trio of songs from Kirklandd.
I just have one question… can someone tell me what ‘SIIYE’ means...? I feel like I’m missing out on something.
