LET THE BECKONING CURRENT OF MELBOURNE ARTIST OCEANS PULL YOU IN WITH THEIR DREAMY DEBUT SINGLE ‘COME SO FAR’
Introducing Melbourne artist Oceans, with their explosive debut ‘Come So Far’. Congruous to the dreamy sonic tides he delivers, Oceans is the aptly chosen moniker of multi-instrumentalist and producer Thomas Lee, who after playing in shoegaze outfit Grazer and featuring on local artist Atalein’s latest single ‘Touch’, is thrilled to officially launch his exciting new solo project with the imminent release of ‘Come So Far’.
Out today, ‘Come So Far’ is a densely layered and beautifully textured first taste of Ocean’s forthcoming debut EP. Serving almost as a microcosm of the EP itself, ‘Come So Far’ manages to capture the full breadth of Ocean’s experimental musicality navigating waves of ambient electronica with analogue and software synthesizers, numerous kick & snare samples and stacked vocal harmonies soaked in shoegaze and dream pop aesthetics. Mixed by Aden Senycia at Love Shack, the result is a buoyant ebb and flow between its many instruments and effects, with enough space between its many moving parts to maintain a lush sonic calm amongst the crashing soundscape.
Listen to 'Come So Far'
“Come So Far was one of the first tracks I wrote in the style that would eventually become Oceans (scrolling through my Ableton files takes it back to late 2015) so it’s been a long time coming for its release. I was initially captivated by the synthesized chord progression, using a Juno 106 combined with various software synths to get the textured sound I was after. I would play those chords on a loop, adding electronic drum samples and then eventually a bass riff and guitar part to separate out the chorus. The song underwent some drastic changes throughout its lifespan, I was still finding my feet as a songwriter in those early days and experimented with a lot of different themes. Come So Far's chorus represents the internal progress I've made from where I started and is a celebration of overcoming hardship and the people who helped me get through it.” - Thomas Lee, Oceans
Ocean’s upcoming EP promises a cathartic and introspective look into Thomas Lee’s beachside upbringing and the important role it has played in shaping the artist and person he is today. Expect to hear dreamy pads overlaid with roaring guitars and whispery vocal harmonies singing ballads of love, loss and letting go of the past. Tom is thrilled to be teaming up with a band of like minded shoegaze lovers and is preparing to take Oceans to the stage in the not-too-distant future to perform selections from his bursting catalogue to a sea of fresh new faces soon. Keep your eye on the horizon for glimmers of what’s next from Oceans, and in the meantime wrap your ears around ‘Come So Far’ and float down its dreamy stream.
