GENESIS OWUSU SHARES NEW SINGLE & VIDEO“SAME THING” OUT NOW VIA OURNESS
After releasing his long-awaited debut album, Smiling With No Teeth, earlier this year to global acclaim, ARIA-nominated, Ghanaian-Australian artist Genesis Owusu is back today with his new single and video “Same Thing”.
Flowing with addictive bass flicks, wobbly synths and the rich production we have come to expect from any Genesis Owusu release, "Same Thing" glistens with future-icon feeling. As his magnetic presence glides between effervescent harmonies, affirming raps and a poetic cross, a brilliantly off-the-wall, psych-twinged video adds to the formula, showcasing the rapidly ascendent artist as we’ve never seen him before.
Genesis Owusu on "Same Thing":
“When the band and I were creating Smiling With No Teeth, we essentially made 60 hours of music for the album in 6 days. The songs chosen for the album conveyed a very specific narrative, but we also made a lot of great music that didn't necessarily fit the album's narrative points. 'Same Thing' was one of the tracks born from the seemingly limitless SWNT sessions. The track is still in the realm of the album's themes of mental health (more specifically, the crazy shit the mind makes up), so the video follows suit with a psychedelic barrage of both colourful and claustrophobic imagery.”
On 2021's debut LP Smiling With No Teeth, Owusu presents a soul-bearing narrative, intuitively picking apart and reassembling themes of mental health, resilience and race to become a culmination of ideas and defining chapter in his acclaimed discography. The album was released in March to mass acclaim, including covers with Acclaim, and NME Australia, feature album on triple j, FBi, Triple R and Radio Adelaide and praise from Rolling Stone, T Magazine, The Monthly, The Australian, ICON and many more. Owusu next embarked on a sold-out national tour, and shared an intimate account of how Smiling With No Teeth came to life, releasing an in-depth look behind the LP within his Beat x Beat episode made in collaboration with Beats by Dre and directed by Riley Blakeway (“The Other Black Dog” and “Gold Chains”). Followed by a "Gold Chains" remix at the hands of Harvey Sutherland, plus an accompanying visual by 3D self-taught digital artist and musician Serwah Attafuah, there has been no stopping the trailblazer on the rise.
The debut album marked the first extended release since 2017’s Cardrive EP, which launched a career that has seen Owusu collect two ARIA nominations, gain attention from tastemakers Sir Elton John & Anthony Fantano and feature across the country’s most iconic festival stages including Groovin’ the Moo, Spilt Milk, St. Jerome’s Laneway Festival, Splendour in the Grass, Field Day, Falls Festival and Meredith Music Festival. Also making his Like A Version debut back in February, Owusu headed into the triple j studio to deliver a powerful rendition of Sex Pistol's anthem, "Anarchy In The UK", alongside the album's debut single, "Don't Need You". Making his return to TV, Genesis joined Sunshine coast punk band, The Chats on the third season of ABC’s The Set. Check out the episode on ABC iView now. Most recently, Genesis Owusu and The Black Dog Band were announced as part of Vivid LIVE's 2021 program, joining Astral People's 10th Birthday show alongside Hiatus Kaiyote, Cosmo's Midnight, DJ Seinfeld and more.
