EP REVIEW: IDENTITY - GOOD NEWS EVERYONE
This month brings the debut release from Melbourne-based punk band Good News Everyone. Their EP, titled Identity, is best described as a unique fusion of metal and punk rock.
The opening track Keep My Distance has a pop-punk drum fill intro before the heavy vocals join in. Featuring distorted sound effects and a catchy melody during the chorus, this song combines multiple elements from different genres. SOS contains a strong instrumental backbone for the vocals to follow along to.
Similarly to the first track, this one contains distorted synth sounds. This song felt slightly heavier, more so with the choruses and killer breakdown towards the end of the song.
The next track, Piercing the Divide, begins with a cool synth-y beat that reappears throughout the song, standing out amongst the other instruments. Featuring melodic vocal harmonies and a strong emphasis on the guitar riffs, this will definitely be a fan-favourite!
A Faded Photograph includes a melodic guitar intro before the rest of the band joins the party. There’s also a snazzy breakdown in the middle of the song that makes you want to mosh to the beat. Blending seamlessly back into the punk chorus, the track is later followed with a breakdown featuring gang vocals, inviting you to shout along!
The closing song is a fitting conclusion to the 5-track EP. These Days showcases their talent and ability to fuse multiple genres. Rather than the clean and heavy vocals fighting against each other for the spotlight, they are instead working together to push the song even further.
I can guarantee you’ve never heard anything quite like Identity before. Definitely check it out!
