‘90s channeling indie-rock artist Tanaya Harper returns in 2020 with new track ‘Evan Keele’ lifted from her forthcoming sophomore EP Slow Motion Breakup. Following from the EP’s first lifted single ‘Crash Pad’ of last year, ‘Evan Keele’ further exemplifies all the unique personal and creative idiosyncrasies that have come to identify Tanaya’s distinct sound – insightful lyricism, silken melodies and off-the-cuff intimate anecdotes of living with depression, anxiety and bipolar disorder.

An ironic misnomer, ‘Evan Keele’ disrupts the common ideology that working or progressing smoothly and steadily through life, without any sudden changes is the optimal way to be. For Tanaya however, the lust for a life that is in no way even keel, or just the chance to get a glimpse of normal life diminishing for a moment, can be an all-consuming compulsive pursuit. So why not write a song about it? Queue dreamlike harmonies, angst-fuelled guitar licks, and awe-inspiring vocal deliveries, and the personification of ‘Evan Keele’ is born.

“Evan Keele is an angsty song about feeling bored with stability. I have Bipolar type 2 and happily take medication for it, but a few years ago when I was initially settling into a stable life I actually grieved the manic highs that I wasn't experiencing anymore. My highs are totally destructive and need to be managed but they're also kind of addictive, all that adrenaline, so I was craving the intensity that I just wasn't getting anymore. I missed it badly and was toying with the idea of going off my meds purely for the mania, but that's DEFINITELY the wrong thing to do, so writing a song was how I got that yearning out of my system. I think a lot of people who take certain kinds of medication relate to this kind of feeling - 'Hey! My life is pretty great now...but I'm also kind of bored.’” – Tanaya Harper

Slow Motion Breakup, slated for release Friday 20 March, follows in the wake of Harper’s successful 2018 WAM nominated debut Some Kinds and navigates mental health, relationships, growth and loss. Recorded, produced and mixed by Dave Parkin at Blackbird Sound Studio and mastered by William BowdenSlow Motion Breakup sees Tanaya at her most vulnerable. A microcosm of her own mind, the EP reaches soaring heights and burrowing lows, often in the same breath, with Harper’s distinguishing indie pop mastery leaving the fuzzy glow of hope behind long after the final echo fades. Join Tanaya as she celebrates the release with a hometown EP launch at Badlands Bar, Friday 3 April with support from Shy Panther, Grunge Barbie and Mitch McDonald.
