"Iconic stuff" - Steph Hughes, triple j Unearthed (5 stars)
Yolŋu surf-rock band, King Stingray have today released their brand new single 'Get Me Out'.
Get Me Out follows on from their hugely successful debut track, Hey Wanhaka, which was added instantly to triple j and radio across the country, propelling the band into the spotlight and delighting audiences with their fresh new Yolŋu surf-rock sound.
A cruisy tune about getting out of the city and heading to the bush, Get Me Out tells the story of the long journey back home. The inspiration for Get Me Out was sparked when King Stingray were on tour with Yothu Yindi when one of their family members got lost in the city of Melbourne.
"She had no phone. Yolŋu style, she navigated her way back to us miraculously and we now laugh about it."
Get Me Out was penned mid-tour, with their hometown Yirrkala at the forefront of their minds, longing for the bush and the sea back at home in North-East Arnhem Land.
"When we see the sun go down, when we see that djapana, wherever we are, we know our home is never far away. Yirrŋa and I wrote this song when we were away on tour. We were thinking about our hometown Yirrkala. But when we saw the sun go down and we saw that sunset we had a mutual feeling of living under the one sun, living under the same sun. Wherever we are, at whatever time zone, there's still just one sun. Seeing that sunset lets us know that our home is never far away."
About King Stingray:
King Stingray are a four piece from Yirrkala, North-East Arnhem Land. Formed by Yirrŋa Yunupiŋu (nephew of the late Dr M Yunupiŋu - Yothu Yindi frontman) and Roy Kellaway (son of Stu Kellaway - Yothu Yindi founding member and bass player), King Stingray blend ancient indigenous melodies with surf, indie and funk influences to create a genre of their own, Yolŋu surf-rock.
King Stingray is a story of lifelong friendship, of two cultures coming together. From toddlers in the Yothu Yindi tour entourage in the 90s, to fully fledged Yothu Yindi members today, Yirrŋa (current lead singer of Yothu Yindi) and Roy (current guitarist of Yothu Yindi and Emily Wurramara) have been playing and making music together for as long as they can remember. King Stingray seamlessly blends Yirrŋa's timeless Yolŋu manikay vocals with Roy’s indie pop credentials (Mary Handsome, Django George).
Young multi-instrumentalist Dimathaya Burarrwanga joins the King Stingray line-up on drums and percussion, with Campbell Messer taking care of bass and back up vocals.
