TIRED LION DROP NEW TRACK ‘CYA LATER,’ BREAKFAST FOR PATHETICS LP DUE NOVEMBER 20
Tired Lion have provided fans with another taste of their forthcoming album this week. 'Cya Later' premiered on triple j's Good Nights on Monday ahead of the track's release today.
"The air smells so different this year, are you over it?"
Sporting the same laid-back, windows-down apathy of Smashing Pumpkins' 1979, Cya Later is sorrowful to suit the mood of our modern day malaise. When Sophie Hopes penned the lyrics "Oh, the world is ending, watch it go" in 2019, she can't have possibly predicted just how different it'd hit at the time of the track's release.
"This song was my attempt to desperately try and find my way out of a bout of depression where I had completely hidden myself from the world", explains Hopes.
"I guess I needed a way to set myself free and find a way to be okay. I moved to Brisbane and was missing my family a lot. When I was writing this song I wanted to use a happy memory that would have the power to take me back to that place."
The video's director Michael Sloane echoes the sentiment, "When Sophie and I were talking through ideas we kept coming back to something that gives you space to breathe and sit with the song. For me it was about trying to get across the subtle feeling the song has of melancholy but also optimism, like moving forward from a difficult time or situation and leaving behind some bad energy."
Tonally, it's a tip of the hat to cited album influences including Archers Of Loaf, Cloud Nothings, Pixies and Pavement and it feels like the perfect predecessor to the release of Tired Lion's 'Breakfast For Pathetics', on November 20 via Dew Process/ Universal Music.
Tired Lion will celebrate the release of Breakfast For Pathetics on Thursday November 19 at Brisbane's Tivoli Hotel. Tickets to the limited capacity, distanced gig are available now. Hopes also plays solo on Sunday 22 November at Kingscliff Beach Hotel for free as part of the Great Southern Nights program.
