Sydney’s Erthlings today return with their latest single, ‘Irrational’, listen and watch HERE. Along with the release, the band is throwing themselves a graduation party on Friday 11 December at Sydney's Oxford Art Factory at their only headline shows in 2020. See the details below.

With full, forward production cloaking a rich reservoir of musical details and nuances, ‘Irrational’ hits multiple strides for the still-enviably-young group at once - simultaneously their most high budget and mature songwriting excursion to date. Channeling the cinematic, reverbed-out romanticism of Beach House or Hatchie, Erthlings tread the line between ethereal shoegaze, shimmering dream pop, and contemporary alt-pop, lead singer Issy Lowe’s pensive vocals floating through a sea of textural guitars.

Comprised of childhood friends who have been writing music together since the age of 12 after meeting while attending the same inner-city Sydney music school, Erthlings have never sounded as together as they do on ‘Irrational as if the four individual members exist as part of the same whole. Now, as the four-piece prepare to graduate high school and launch themselves into a world of pandemics, recessions, and uncertainty, their latest single acts as the opening statement to the next phase of their career, cooly affirming confidence that Erthlings' timeless songwriting will remain. Bottling the adriftness of a clouded mental state, of not knowing what to do, say, or how to feel, 'Irrational' shakes off the anxieties of an unknowable future with easy grace. 'Irrational' sits in the current moment, acknowledges it, and then strives to move beyond, an invaluable and often under-acknowledged perspective from those whose lives will be shaped most by current global upheaval.

Directed by Courtney Brookes, the Irrational’ music video finds Erthlings performing in the middle of a neon-lit skating rink, as rollerskaters circle around them, capturing the track’s hazy essence.

Of the track, the band share that, “Irrational is about feeling like you’ve overreacted in a situation and acknowledging that you took things the wrong way and we wanted to portray the range of emotions and thought processes that accompany these experiences. As 2020 progresses we feel ‘Irrational’ is a strong reflection of how many people feel today, including us as we attempt to finish high school during a pandemic! During this difficult and stressful time, we’ve been lucky enough to be able to produce a video (with the help of an amazing team!) that reflects the emotions carried throughout the song and also shows the more energetic and playful side of us as a band. We’re so incredibly proud of the song and video and we can’t wait for people to see it!”.

'Irrational' arrives as Erthlings first new music in over a year, following the September 2019 release of their debut EP, Indigo. Throughout 2018 and 2019, an attention-grabbing series of singles from that EP - ‘Returning’, ‘Bridges’, ‘Cuts and Bruises’ - propelled the Sydney foursome to widespread international critical acclaim and commercial adoration, garnering praise from the likes of The New York Times, Refinery29, Nylon Mag, NME, Paste Magazine and more. Across radio waves, they received rotation and airplay on triple j, FBi Radio, Beats 1 with Matt Wilkinson, BBC 6, KCRW, Radio X and others. Festival performances at the likes of Splendour In The Grass, Groovin The Moo and BIGSOUND followed, as did support slots for Clairo, Amy Shark, Wafia and G Flip on their nation-wide tours.
