New-Zealand solo artist Navvy reveals her new single, ‘Pieces’. Produced by Starsmith. (Jessie Ware, Jess Glynne, Dermot Kennedy), ‘Pieces’ shows Navvy’s ability to pick apart complex emotions within the confines of a pop song. The single is accompanied by a lyric video which had its first look overnight as Track Of The Day on CLASH who declare, “Songwriting with a stark, almost opaque sense of the personal, she hauls down the walls between her and the listener."
Navvy thought the rest of her life was mapped out, when, after an unexpectedly turbulent 12 months, the striking new talent emerged last summer. Just months after the sudden collapse of a four-year-relationship, Navvy released an EP titled The Breakup featuring favourite ‘If I Can’t Have You’, and by the end of the year she had released the No Hard Feelings EP featuring title track ‘No Hard Feelings’ and ‘Scared To Be Happy’.
Now in 2020, her deluge of electronic pop takes a fresh turn with ‘Pieces’, a song where Navvy reframes the previous year’s difficulties in a remarkably philosophical manner. “It was a messed up time in my life,” she acknowledges, “but now I simply feel lucky to have loved so hard that losing it felt so horrible.”
Navvy grew up in a house next door to her grandparents, who’d moved to New Zealand from Ireland with little to their name then worked, hustled, and built up a small business. Most artists recall childhood homes filled with the sound of pop but Navvy grew up without any at all. The only tunes she’d hear were the opera and classical songs rattling through the wall from her grandparents’ side of the building. “Everyone's always like, ‘I grew up on the Beatles, blah blah blah’, and I absolutely did not,” she laughs. “But thanks to my grandparents, opera became my version of pop.”
Navvy’s vocal flair came to light at a young age, but when she was twelve there was a setback: inept vocal tuition at school led to vocal cord nodules, and Navvy was told she’d never sing again. She spent years in vocal rehab – a period that in hindsight was actually her making. A self diagnosed workaholic, Navvy spent that recovery time finessing her first EP; the artwork and imagery, working on her music videos - this relentless pursuit of her own vision is what sets Navvy out, working constantly to create an artistic world of her own.
All her hard work is clearly beginning to pay off! Along with countless love letters from press and radio, Navvy has had countless tracks featured on huge playlists across both Spotify and Apple and picked up celebrity admirers such as Maisie Peters. Since it's release on Friday, 'Pieces' has featured across 22 New Music Friday Spotify playlists globally as well as Get Popped and New Pop Revolution and Apple Music's New Music Daily in 14 countries, A-List Pop, Breaking Pop and Future Hits across Asia Pacific.
As you’d expect, 2020 has brought its own new perspectives and challenges which mean Navvy, like all of us, has been making changes in the present in order to have even the slightest hope of being prepared for whatever the future might hold. The fruits of all that will come later in the year, but for the time being ‘Pieces’ is the latest chapter in a story that spans twelve months in which Navvy became a whole new person.
