After releasing singles "Delusional" and "Shitty Weather" last year, leading to tours with Slowly Slowly, Tiny Moving Parts, BUGS, and playing a run of festivals across Australia, Squid Fishing’s Ethan found himself temporarily back in his old hometown Hobart and in a bit of a slump. The joy of life on the road playing music and the reality of working ridiculous hours back at a night club while at home, had come to a frustrating collision of ups and downs.
(Ethan Groombridge) "I was on my break at the nightclub I was currently working at back in Tasmania & had been in a bit of a slump for a week or two and lyrics kind of just fell out onto my phone screen in a little never ending note I have"
He took the track to the rest of the band the next day, and it all came together surprisingly fast. Produced and mixed by Aaron Dobos, "Elevator" takes on a drone-y, washy, melodic sound, emphasising the roller coaster of emotion and confusion in the lyrics.
"The headspace I was in at the time was certainly a strange one, I was constantly battling my moods and was never quite sure what was just around the corner. The lyrics touch on the struggle with accepting adult-hood & responsibility and not having the liberty to always do what you want to do.
I hope that this song may provide some comfort during a troubling time."
Whilst preserving the classic vibe of old school punk with dirty and unsettling guitar tones, crashing cymbals and deep confronting bass, Squid Fishing effortlessly blend indie & emo into the equation with soothing vocal melodies and well controlled dynamic.
Having played festival lineups such as Party In The Paddock, Falls Festival, Till The Wheels Fall Off & Wooly Mammoth, as well as supporting acts such as Tiny Moving Parts (USA), Slowly Slowly, Bugs, Spiderbait & The Lazy Susans, Squid Fishing are all about creating a safe and happy environment for people to come and shout about their feelings.
New single "Elevator" is available on all streaming services from today, Thursday April 23.
