The EP opens with the love-swept vocals of ‘Deja Vu’, a track that solidified Lastlings as breakthrough performers leading into the release of First Contact, before flowing into a moving rendition of ‘Take My Hand’ that fully exposes the track’s raw emotion, a feeling that resides at the core of the album and within the ethos of the larger project. ‘Out Of Touch’ highlights the duo’s clever production skills, whilst EP closer ‘No Time’ spotlights Josh and Amy’s signature transportive lyricism.
“These recordings are actually the first time we had stripped-back our songs to an acoustic level - live or recorded, so it was in some ways a new challenge for us. Initially we were nervous about playing these isolated parts, however we felt the songs took on a new breath of life - we were certainly pleased with the result and reaction from fans so far. We started with ‘No Time’ and from there we did ‘Deja Vu’, ‘Take My Hand’ and ‘Out Of Touch’. We had a lot of fun simplifying and bringing space to these songs that are usually full of more energy and layers of sounds.” – Lastlings
Each track on the EP arrives with an accompanying live video, three of which were premiered via a Spin Session.
Released this past November, Lastling’s debut album First Contact was warmly received amongst fans and critics, with strong support from DSPs, triple j and community radio locally and press love from a wide array of sites including Billboard, Consequence of Sound, Dancing Astronaut, Forbes, RUSSH, Purple Sneakers and more. Billboard gushed of the record “smart, deep, futuristic and a little bit celestial”, a fitting description for a project based on the immersive worlds of science fiction and narrative-driven storytelling.
Lastlings’ momentum spilled rapidly into 2021, kicking off the year with a feature on SG Lewis’ brilliant track ‘All We Have’ from his recent full-length times. A striking remix of Bob Moses’ ‘The Blame’ for the Californian duo’s Blame LP quickly followed.
Lastlings’ deep sense of artistry and determination have set them apart across today’s musical landscape. Championed by Grammy-nominated trio RÜFÜS DU SOL, Lastlings were welcomed to the band’s own label, Rose Avenue Records. Since then, they’ve worked with producers like the aforementioned SG Lewis, have been remixed by Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs, and toured with industry giants like Two Door Cinema Club, Bob Moses and Glass Animals. Together with their three-piece live setup featuring Josh on keys and guitar, a live drummer, and Amy on vocals, they have played career-defining sold-out shows alongside RÜFÜS DU SOL at Colorado’s Red Rocks, Los Angeles State Historic Park and many other renowned venues. Now, following on from sold-out shows in their home state of QLD last year, fans in Melbourne and Sydney have the opportunity to catch the band in their natural element. Limited tickets remain.
