INTRODUCING MELBOURNE’S MARBEE WITH HER ENDLESSLY NOSTALGIC AND DREAMY SINGLE ‘MUSIC BOX’ + TOTE UPSTAIRS LAUNCH SHOW
Genre exploring Jakarta-born Melbourne musician Marbee introduces an exciting new sound on her latest single ‘Music Box’. Self-described as a free-spirited bird with a punk collar around her neck, Marbee’s music twists and bends the musical spectrum in on itself, allowing her to marvel at the new and exciting opportunities that arise from doing so. Out Wednesday 10 March, Marbee’s latest single ‘Music Box’ invites listeners into her inner world, signposting what’s yet to come with just a taste of her seemingly boundless imagination.
Not unlike its namesake, ‘Music Box’ starts with softly spoken, angelic vocals nestled atop delicate key tinkering and shimmering synths that create a dreamy atmosphere of nostalgic introspection. And then the build begins… Produced by and featuring Andy White on guitars and bass, and Sebastian White on drums, ‘Music Box’ is a coming of age single, exploring adulthood and childhood longing in an exciting first taste from this artist on the rise.
“I intend to awaken happy and nostalgic feelings from childhood, mixed with shades of ‘rains and thunder’ that even a childlike past cannot escape from. The repetitive melody imitates the cyclical tone of the music box, evoking the protective, albeit fragile, shelter of human relations as well as the enchanting and lulling attraction of music in its simplest mechanical form. I recorded the xylophone in a 100 year-old building to capture its ancient atmospherics.. ‘When I play the music box, it takes me back to home’” – Marbee
As a fledgling artist with an explorative approach, Marbee has found a way to free herself of the bounds of any one genre and is ready to let her imagination lift her into full flight. Existing outside the limits of any one style or sound, Marbee’s music promises to interrogate and expand beyond the boundaries of her own artistry and songwriting with each subsequent release. Stay tuned for more from 2021’s one-to-watch.

‘Music Box’ Lyrics
When I play the music box, it takes me back to home
Ralph the rabbit, myrtle the turtle
Makes a lovely fable
In a table of two
When your magic hands turn things to life
In a paintbrush or interface
Everything falls into place
Do you hide in a hardcore shell
Or do you keep your head held high?
Do you sleep when the thunders roll
Where those dreams can’t bother you
When I play the music box, it takes me back to home
In a cozy house, with a nice meal
Raisin cakes or veal
When your magic hands turn things to life
In a paintbrush or interface
Everything falls into place
Do you hide in a hardcore shell
Or do you keep your head held high?
Do you sleep when the thunders roll
Where those dreams can’t bother you
Home sweet home
Comfy shelter from the rain
Home sweet home
The only place I feel safe from pain
Do you hide in a hardcore shell
Or do you keep your head held high?
Do you sleep when the thunders roll
Where those dreams can’t bother you
When I play that music box, it takes me back to home
