JACK RIVER LAUNCHES PODCAST TO REBEL IN THE TIMES
Jack River (real name Holly Rankin) is an ARIA award-nominated musician and artist, festival organiser, writer, creator of art and a crusader for change. She has a thoughtful and hungry mind and when she isn’t creating for her art’s sake, she’s on the frontlines of inspiring and creating a revolution.
Upon the relaunch of Rolling Stone Australia earlier this year, Jack River picked the brain of Midnight Oil’s frontman, environmentalist, activist and politician Peter Garrett in an interview printed in Rolling Stone’s current issue (May-July). The conversation sparked an intensely burning desire within Jack River to continue to ensure important viewpoints associated with environmental, social, cultural and political issues are being discussed and brought to the forefront in an effort to bring about vital change in today’s society.
With passion running hot through her veins, and when given a forced break from touring due to COVID-19 hitting our shores, Jack River went into planning mode, contacting important voices within the music industry whose viewpoints she strongly believes need to be heard, understood and respected. Following countless hours of research, Zoom dates and audio edits, To Rebel In The Times - an independent podcast by Jack River talking change, music and the times, was born!
“We are living in such a huge time, undergoing intense culture shifts, wrangling the upheaval of old ideas and (hopefully) replacing them with something better,” Jack River declares. “With To Rebel In The Times, I wanted to know where artists’ minds are at, especially the artists who have made it their life and art’s work to create change, and why it is so important to them that they use their voice, that they stand up and not only say something, but do something,” she explains.
Jack River is thrilled to present To Rebel In The Times’ first series is titled ‘Sounds Of Change’. To Rebel In The Times will present a new episode each week for six weeks discussing issues closest and most important to six artists from all over the world. To launch the podcast and series, episode one kicks off with Cub Sport’s Tim Nelson in the hot seat for an incredibly honest discussion about falling in love and the demolition of gender constructs. Week two will see Jack River discussing Indigenous Land Rights with Alaskan musician and activist John Gouley - frontman of Portugal. The Man, and during week three, Kita Alexander will join Jack River to discuss motherhood and feminism in music. From weeks four to six, Jack River will have Briggs, Ziggy Alberts and Alex The Astronaut as guests on To Rebel In The Times. Expect heavy-hitting topics, impassioned and important conversations!
Listeners will be invited to delve even deeper into the mind’s of Jack River and some of her guests with a Question & Answer session to take place in the days following each episode. Hosted on To Rebel In The Times’ Instagram, fans will be able to engage in their own education and conversation on the matters that speak to them via the podcast’s subject matter. Follow To Rebel In The Times to stay up to date on episodes and dates, times and guests for Questions & Answer sessions.
The notches of Jack River’s musical belt tell tales of a debut EP Highway Songs No. 2 featuring breakout single ‘Palo Alto’, a debut album Sugar Mountain which made its appearance on the ARIA Album Chart at #11, earned the young artist three ARIA Award nominations and featured fan favourites ‘Fool’s Gold’ and ‘Confess’, and an impressive EP titled Stranger Heart released in February this year. Jack River also co-wrote and featured on Peking Duk’s huge single ‘Sugar’ and featured on ‘Multiply’ with Love Fame Tragedy (The Wombats' Matthew Murphy’s solo project).
As a touring musician Jack River has sold out countless shows on headline tours, performed at the biggest festivals in Australia including Splendour in the Grass, Falls and Laneway Festivals as well as The Great Escape in the UK. She is also the curator and organiser of Grow Your Own - a grassroots festival showcasing Australian music and local producers in Jack River’s hometown in the Forster-Tuncurry region.
To Rebel In The Times is an important next step for Jack River and something she feels deeply passionate and excited to share with the world.
