FRESCO KYOTO RETURN WITH DEFIANT NEW SINGLE AND VIDEO, ‘WHATEVER YOU SAY’
Brisbane indie-pop act Fresco Kyoto bring together meticulous production, gorgeous textures and the exceptional voice of frontman Robbie Balmer in their powerful new single, ‘Whatever You Say’, released Friday April 3rd via Double Drummer.
Co-written and co-produced by Aidan Hogg (Jaguar Jonze, Holy Holy, Hatchie), 'Whatever You Say' is the follow-up to last year's debut EP from this rising young Brisbane band. Displaying a fusion of electronic, indie-rock and vocal soul, ‘Whatever You Say’ is as ethereal as the band’s previous material, but with a refined sense of dynamics and a huge, defiant chorus befitting these unpredictable times.
Recorded between The Moon Room and Hunting Ground Studios in Brisbane, ‘Whatever You Say’ follows a period of soul-searching in which the band honed their influences into something distinctly their own. As the first taste of music from them in 2020, it's a strong statement. “This past year has been one full of experimentation both in sound, as well as our creative process. We have explored new and exciting writing techniques, and opened our minds to alternative imagery and textures.” - Fresco Kyoto
The music video for ‘Whatever You Say’ is a similarly striking one, with the band connecting with director Karl Bouro and the Brisbane City Council to create the clip as part of the BCC’s QUBE Effect initiative. Established to provide musicians with further development opportunities within the music industry, the QUBE Effect proved to be a fruitful avenue for Fresco Kyoto to bring ‘Whatever You Say’ to life onscreen. Filmed at the Queensland Multicultural Centre, the music video is centred squarely on the emotional impact of the song. “We sought inspiration from other music videos whose songs had a similar emotive landscape; it was important to us to explore the concept of motion as well as fourth wall breaks during significant moments in the song, and we think the video reflects this.” Fresco Kyoto
With a burgeoning live following in their native Brisbane, Fresco Kyoto's recent shows have included a sold out headline at The Zoo, as well as supports with Greta Stanley, Jaguar Jonze and Cousin Tony’s Brand New Firebird. An east coast tour in support of ‘Whatever You Say’ is pending as soon as circumstances allow.
Now heading into an exciting new chapter, Fresco Kyoto are ready to share their compelling new sound with the world.
