ROMANIE UNVEILS HER NEW DREAMY INDIE-POP SINGLE ‘FAKE FRIENDS’
Melbourne based Romanie releases her delicate, yet potent new single ‘Fake Friends’. Produced by James Seymour (Feelds, Merpire) from Small Time Group and mastered by Isaac Barter in Brunswick, the track showcases Romanie’s vivid and flawless vocals where she reflects on the negative aspects that friendship sometimes encompasses.
Speaking about the inspiration for ‘Fake Friends, Romanie says, “I’ve always valued friendship as one of the best things in life, and it’s heartbreaking people sometimes just lose contact for whatever reason. I feel like I have felt like a fake friend at certain moments in life when I’m not being in touch enough or when I want to help a friend but don’t exactly know how or what to say. Sometimes we’re too caught up in our own lives that we don’t see when a friend is in need of a conversation. I definitely want this song to be a reminder to be good to each other always, and I’d like to tell all my friends I love them dearly.”
The video for 'Fake Friends', which could be described as an ode to Melbourne post lockdown, is a collaboration with her friends Brayden Alden and Malachy Cole from Red Cloud Films.
The idea to use yellow roses in the video symbolising friendship was suggested by Malachy Cole and Romanie handed them out to strangers hoping they would become her friends. “Every ‘stranger’ you see in the clip, is also a friend of mine. We wanted to show a very positive and bright person going into the big city with high hopes to find friends, but this person would soon learn it’s not as easy as expected to find true friends. The closer we get into the city, the darker the mood gets and typically Melbourne it of course started to rain as soon as we crossed the William Barak Bridge.
The end of the video is symbolic with the reversed shot of the petal coming back to the rose after I’ve picked it a few shots earlier - to show there’s always hope for friendship.” Romanie
‘Fake Friends’ is the follow up single to ‘I’m Anything (But Myself Around You)’ which was released in February 2021. With her honest and intimate songs, Romanie brings you melancholic and sometimes personal topics from her new home base, Melbourne.
“Being this far away from home - from friends that I’ve known for almost my whole life is extremely hard at times and I’ve considered myself so lucky to keep them close still, even though I’m far away. I’m even more lucky to have met some amazing friends in the short time I’ve been in Melbourne and therefore I wanted to add a positive light in my fake friends song, have a sort of choir in the bridge that was a celebration of these friendships I’ve established over the years in my life.
Romanie will be celebrating the release of ‘Fake Friends’ by hosting a full band performance at her single launch at Abbotsford Convent on Sunday June 13 - TICKETS HERE.
The event will be a celebration of all her friends and showcasing what they’ve done throughout Melbourne lockdown, how they’ve contributed to her music and life. Romanie says, “I think the most beautiful aspect of friendship is the wish to lift each other up and I very much want to do so by organising this single launch. On the event we’ll be having a short theatre performance, a lot of music of course, art (a limited collaborative merch line for Fake Friends!) and more. It’s going to be a special afternoon and evening in Abbotsford and I cannot wait for it to happen.”
