Bringing together a shared love for evocative sounds and the sorts of slow jams that are made to be immersed in, Melbourne duo Harves introduce themselves with debut offering, ‘Do Your Worst’

The single, also set to be featured in 2020 romantic drama After We Collided (Selma Blair), is an example of the tight creative process musicians Samuel K Sproull and Matthew Wright have developed over years of writing and collaborating across a number of different projects.

The final result here is a song that is rich in its sonic tones and emotional pull. ‘Do Your Worst’ is a striking tune to set the bar with but as Harves have discovered, when you bring two unique sets of influences together and let the ideas flow, the end result is often unpredictable and in this case, well worth the journey.

LISTEN TO ‘DO YOUR WORST HERE

Recorded out of Melbourne’s Sargood Studios, ‘Do Your Worst’ wore a number of different guises before Harves settled on its final form. Produced, engineered and mixed by Sproull, whose credits include records for the likes of Japanese Wallpaper and Montgomery and Wright’s The Getaway Plan, the song is equal parts breathy and haunting in its arrangement. And then with Wright’s vocals threaded throughout, ‘Do Your Worst’ comes together with gorgeous flair.

Fitting in a similar lane to expansive offerings from artists like James BlakeSampha and Sohn, ‘Do Your Worst’ is an impressive statement of intent from Harves as they continue to work on delivering more music that is representative of their individual and combined musical inspirations. “It was pretty clear that our common ground musically is a keen interest in cinematic slow jams, unique textures and pop music or at least, that’s when things started to click for us and we started to know what Harves ‘is’. We’re also big prog and R&B heads, so we tap into that a lot too.” HARVES
