AKA LUI SHARES VIDEO FOR ‘PUSHING ME ASIDE’
Melding soulful melodies, deep grooves, and infectious beats, new single “Pushing Me Aside” by Northern NSW singer-songwriter-producer AKA Lui is a dreamy bedroom pop track that taps the shoulders of psychedelic contemporaries Tame Impala and MGMT, whilst remaining true to the mystery and spontaneity encompassing AKA Lui’s unique sound.
A pre-breakup slow burner, new single “Pushing Me Aside” is the first of a run of singles tracking the various aspects and narratives of a break-up, exploring the precise moment you realise you are no longer as significant to somebody as you once were.
Filmed at the local Byron Bay IGA, the surreal and hyper-colour video for "Pushing Me Aside" sees AKA Lui get despondently pushed around the stark bright aisles of shampoo, mixed nuts, and vegetable juices... forming a glazed and dream-like metaphor for the feelings of abandonment and hopelessness conveyed in the song:
“My housemate (Zac Devine) is a filmmaker & naturally we've been spending a lot of time together since Covid. I was preparing to release this new single and so we sat out the back with a bottle of wine & started brainstorming film clip concepts. The supermarket seemed like the perfect place to shoot... it has consistent lighting, is open to the public, & the shopping trolley stands as the perfect metaphor for Pushing Me Aside.
The initial idea was to do a one take through the store and get the hell out of there before we got kicked out, we even did multiple run throughs in the car park to make sure we could nail it, but the staff ended up tolerating us with a lot more patience & understanding than we expected. Big ups Byron Bay IGA!”
