“...her impact has been felt far and wide” Tone Deaf

“The change up on this track is killer! And I havent’ even started on Elsy’s vocals - I can’t wait to hear her singing on more tracks, she’s a natural.”  Dave Ruby Howe (Triple J Unearthed)

“When the debut EP does come, , it will be the debut of a powerful voice amongst the increasingly influential Playback 808 Kingdom.” Johnny von Einem (CityMag)

Music in Exile is proud to present Never There, a new single from Elsy Wameyo to be released this December. Recorded in Adelaide with producer Mario Späte (Tkay Maidza, Montaigne, Okenyo), this emotional track speaks about the sometimes chaotic and complicated nature of relationships, both with yourself as well as with others. Gospel influences resound as the sparse opening creates space for the intimacy of Elsy’s vocals, musically reflecting a sense of isolation and pain.

“How can I ever love, if you were never there?” - Elsy Wameyo

Exploring personal emotions through her music comes second nature to Wameyo. Her previous release, ‘Pastor’, shares her personal connection to her faith, whilst ‘Outcast’ speaks of the mental struggles existing within the African community around issues of skin colour.  This new release further highlights Elsy Wameyo’s incredibly talent as an artist as she continues to communicate vulnerability and artistic strength.

The last few years have been crucial in Wameyo’s artistic development. As part of Adelaide’s Playback 808 crew, Elsy has risen as one of the city’s most exciting names. Poetic and rhythmic, Wameyo’s performances have won her praise locally and she has appeared alongside artists such as Sampa the Great, Masego, Adrian Eagle, Thundamentals and Lady Leshur. She has performed on stages at South Australian legs of the Laneway Festival and Groovin the Moo, and her craft has flourished in front of crowds of all sizes. Wameyo was awarded Young Kenyan of the Year in 2018 and also won Best Hip Hop artist at the South Australian Music Awards, as well as receiving previous nominations in Best New Artist, Best World Music and People’s Choice Soul/Funk/RNB Artist categories.
