SINGLE REVIEW: MAJA - MOTHER’S DAUGHTER

Do you like folk? Gentle, soothing harmony? Well; this song is for you, my little muffins.

Maja Puseljic (My-a) is a folk singer/songwriter from Brisbane, now living in Melbourne. Mother’s Daughter was written as a personal way to cope with such a huge change; being alone in a new city is honestly really fucking stressful and lonely: I personally come from a small (ish) town and when I went to uni straight out of high school, I moved to the big city and my god, did I feel alone.

Maja’s soothing melodies and heartfelt, pained singing really tugs at our own personal memories in a somewhat melancholy way. We are alone, but we are going to be okay. It sucks for sure, but we are going to get through it.

I really like the personal connection that Maja shares with this song: she wrote it as a reminder pf her strong relationship with her mother: while you are lonely, you may never really be alone and especially during a pandemic, you will find home with family and friends and be connected even if you’re not physically together.

I was really affected by the verse about a father figure (her own?) and how that relationship really changed her in a different way and she carries that with her. I understand how you feel, Maja. I do.

The acoustic guitar really reminds me a lot of Missy Higgins; (Maja if you’re reading this I mean that in the kindest way possible. You are so authentic and true to yourself and I admire that.)

Maja’s influences for this particular song include Bon Iver and Laura Marling; two very strong acoustic acts that vocalise and tear apart our hearts simultaneously.

This song is so beautiful. It’s so genuine and just strong. It’s uplifting, but more in a melancholy way. We feel better, but we are a little sad about it because we know where we came from and it hurts a little bit.

Maja- this is excellent. I can’t wait to listen to the rest of your album.
