Holy Shmiv, the newly established solo project of Harry Watson, has just released his debut single ‘Something Random’, to the local Melbourne music scene.
The narrative for Holy Shmiv’s new single, stems from the title itself; Something Random. Having stumbled across a case of mid Covid blues, Harry’s new emotive outlet – Holy Shmiv, has led to many spontaneous creative sessions, stemming from the steamy concrete, corduroy lined basement of his Footscray share house. What you see is what you get with Holy Shmiv; no apology needed.
“I remember walking in with the song title, a melody and some riffs and ended up writing lyrics twenty minutes before we recorded vocals”. This organic process can be heard in Harry’s smooth but jangle-based phrasing throughout the track. Interlaced with deep bass synth grooves, positioned over chilled but driven guitar jigs, something random is the ultimate laid-back croon tune.
Holy Shmiv is being brought to life by Mornington Peninsula’s Harry Watson (Bellhop). Searching for a break from the screams and a door to his daydreams, the now Melbourne based muso is being led to a new outlet of expression. With help from Gippsland's Rose Verey (The Spaghetti Stains) and sister Bella Watson, together they make smooth, love laced indie tunes that hold hints of interweaving hip hop sounds.
Born from the process of experimentation and a love for big dirty bass tones, Holy Shmiv is a combination of classic style instruments positioned against punchy synth bass jigs. It’s the combination of indie, jazz, soul and blues influences, that bring to life a chilled but driven sound, perfect for kicking back and sinking into with a cold bev or two. His slacker rock tunes can be traced back to the sounds of Homeshake, Yellow Days, Cosmo Pyke and Childish Gambino - all of which filter their way into the works of Holy Shmiv.
Having previously collaborated with other peninsula-based creatives such as Ryan Taylor (Shaky Knee Dream Machine) and Brodie Casey (Easy Browns, Muma Ganoush, Dexyoscillator), Harry’s roots have since stemmed away from his local hometown scene, branching out into a wider Melbourne music community.
Holy Shmiv’s new single ‘Something Radom' is available now on all streaming platforms, with a music video set to follow soon. Harry is also looking forward to bringing his debut EP into the world early 2021, something to stay tuned for.
