Thursday 22 February – Australian rockers Hands Like Houses make a powerful return with their brand new single "BLOODRUSH" featuring RedHook's Emmy Mack, revealed as part of Tropo - Volume 1, the first of a series of releases to come in 2024. It follows the postponement of Hands Like Houses' headline tour until May, with an extra show added in Canberra.

A post-hardcore anthem, "BLOODRUSH" depicts a tumultuous relationship with addiction and communicates the rush people seek to get through the day, without consideration of the consequences that follow. There is an acknowledgement of deep entanglement in what is a destructive cycle - feeling enslaved by the allure of drugs or other unhealthy coping mechanisms, as well as the casual culture surrounding them.

Frontman Josh Raven shares "The song for me touches on addiction as a whole, and how it affects all of us in different forms. I’ve been dependent on varying toxic substances/behaviours throughout my life and it feels like today, more than ever, it’s so much easier to get a hold of something that makes it easier to 'cope'." Co-writer and vocalist Emmy Mack adds "I remember sitting down with the instrumental for this song and was searching for lyrical inspiration, and as I was trying to think, I just kept huffing on my vape for comfort. I realised I’d never smoked a day in my life but had somehow gotten hooked so easily on these fuckers. It was too easy to get addicted and too hard to quit, and I know that’s something a lot of people are struggling with right now.”

The first look into the new era of Hands Like Houses came with riff-heavy "Heaven" in 2023, followed by "Better Before" earlier this month, featuring metalcore legend Aaron Gillespie (Underoath, The Almost). This theme of entry and new beginning is mirrored by the title and sound of Tropo - Volume 1 - named after the Troposphere, the lowest layer of the atmosphere. With fresh eyes and energy, Hands Like Houses have taken a trip down memory lane to explore familiar sounds from their history, particularly revisiting tones reminiscent of the Dissonants era. The five-piece tuned into where they came from and how they got here to reimagine and reinvent what their old sound could feel like in 2024.
