Today, revered Australian singer-songwriter Ainslie Wills partners with the critically acclaimed American artist Old Sea Brigade on Detour. The lush and complex new single available via AWAL, is a call and response from across the seas, born between two artists in lockdown who have never met in person.
Recorded remotely with Ainslie in Melbourne and Old Sea Brigade in Nashville, Tennessee, Detour showcases Ainslie’s emotionally captivating allure, alongside the dreamy and soulful vocals of Old Sea Brigade.
“Detour is the universal story about knowing that you may be someone’s rebound and still falling hard, despite knowing the risks… love wins every time,” says Ainslie of the track.
“The making of Detour has been one of the most unique projects I’ve been involved with. The recording process has been a worldly collaboration amongst such talented people, most of whom have never met in person. I feel so inspired by everyone involved with this process and am really grateful to sing with Ainslie,” adds Old Sea Brigade.
Detour was born from a fun and relaxed writing session which Ainslie describes as an ‘effortless’ connection between Evan Klar, Hailey Collier and herself. “I’m constantly jotting down little phrases or song titles that I hope will spark a new song into life. When I got into the session that day, one of those aforementioned titles came to mind and Detour was born. There was such an incredible chemistry in the room,” muses Ainslie of the creation of the track.
Ainslie was due to travel to Nashville this year to write and record, however with international borders being closed, it was an easy decision to collaborate remotely with Nashville artist, Old Sea Brigade following the introduction by their managers. The song fell into place seamlessly, travelling between Melbourne, Nashville and finally Berlin, where Australian producer Evan Klar is based during lockdown.
Both artists have made a name for themselves respectively in their hometowns and through touring across Europe and the UK. Old Sea Brigade has accumulated over 70 million streams on Spotify and has supported the likes of Julien Baker, Hiss Golden Messenger, amongst others. Ainslie is a three times APRA nominee for ‘Song of the Year’ as well as a two time Australian Music Prize nominee for her two albums - You'll Go Your Way, I'll Go Mine and All You Have Is All You Need.
