SHAHRAE RELEASES EDGY, ALT-POP ANTHEM ‘CONTROL’

Adelaide-born, Melbourne-based rising alt-pop star Shahrae has released her latest tune “Control.” The  powerful bassline and dark, haunting electronice tones encapsulate the uniquely ethereal qualities of Shahrae’s stunning vocal capabilities.

“I wrote ‘Control’ about feeling out of control. Feeling like a part of yourself that you dislike is the one in control, watching over everything and making decisions while you just kinda sit and watch. My co-producer, Rudy, sent me the bass track and verse one just came to me, I almost felt like it wrote itself.

I wanted to write about feeling as if a part of yourself that you don’t really like, or maybe even your mental health, like depression, anxiety, if the one pulling the strings and taking the steering wheel. It’s the one in your head making decisions while you just watch and suffer the consequences.”

Control” is a truly immersive experience, artistically blending the themes explored in the lyrics with the production work on the track. Shahrae’s ability to create an atmospheric build up to an upbeat chorus that maintains it’s haunting undertones is impressive.

“I wanted the song to have this darker, creepy, on edge feeling, while being just a little weird. The distorted vocals make me think of this anxious feeling. The scream, yelling, telling someone to stand back because you don’t know who is in control anymore.”

Alongside busking from the age of 15, Shahrae launched her own YouTube channel in 2016, posting acoustic covers of some of her favourite artists. Over the last 3 years she has amassed almost 700,000 views and gained over 15,000 subscribers. Shah-Rae launched the Shahrae project with her debut single “Awkward”, a tale of the introverted. Being coined as ‘one of 2019’s most exciting newcomers’, she followed up her debut single with dreamlike “Forget To Forget Me” and heavy hitting “Outsider” shortly after.

Shahrae went on to release “Like The Others Do” alongside “Holding On” as the last two tracks from her EP Awkward released August 2019. After the release of her debut EP, Shahrae took out the title of Asia-Pacific winner of the Vans Musicians Wanted competition, and had her biggest single “Like The Others Do” turned into an MTV produced music video filmed in Malaysia. After this she released her last single “Shadow” and followed it up with a handful of accompanying live shows, including Laneway Music Festival.
