LUCY SUGERMAN IGNORES ALL THE RELATIONSHIP WARNING SIGNS WITH NEW SINGLE "colour blind"
After releasing her debut single ‘i wanna kiss boys cos i’m bored’ at the end of last year, Canberra’s 19 year old Lucy Sugerman now returns with another candid and relatable taste of her everyday experiences of young modern life and love with new single ‘colour blind’ and a sold out debut Sydney show tonight at The Lord Gladstone.
Jam-packed with vintage guitars, a soaring angsty chorus melody, and playful lo-fi pads and keys, ‘colour blind’ was co-written with Dylan Nash (Dean Lewis, Eluera, Shannen James, The Million), and is about looking back at the reality of past relationships with a stark, sometimes unforgiving 20-20 clarity.
Reflecting on the realisation that she only has herself to blame for not paying attention to the warning signs, and continuing relationships when deep down she knew they weren’t good for her (or the other person... for that matter), ‘colour blind’ is Lucy owning up to her own mis-steps and mistakes in love.
(Lucy Sugerman) "I wrote this song with my friend Dylan Nash on the day of my 18th birthday.
I was flicking through my songwriting book and piped up with a line I had written into a different song at home ‘…all these red flags, but I’m colour blind’. We took it, and ran with it, and the song flowed so seamlessly and was all written in about 1-2 hours.
Songwriting is a way of unpacking emotions and why I do things - and writing ‘colour blind’ was a really frank and blunt exploration for me personally of why we tend to put people we love on pedestals, and fall into toxic behaviours. It’s a self depreciating and humorous dive into my inner monologue and views on my love life, capturing what I felt like was a big problem at the time (I laugh now. And it still occurs)."
Lucy has also been invited to participate in the 2021 Melbourne Songhubs this week, curated by Gretta Ray. This years Songhubs songwriting camp curation brings together selected women-identifying or non-binary intensive APRA AMCOS members and renowned international songwriters and producers to create new hits. Visually inspired by her Vietnamese heritage, and sonically inspired by her songwriting heroes from the 60s and 70s, the bedroom pop movement, and her everyday experiences of modern love and life, nineteen year old Lucy Sugerman has been writing and performing music for many years. Building and developing her songwriting and direction in her bedroom until finally ready to reveal it to the world, she writes confessional pop with a knack for clever lyricism and catchy relatable topics.
Blending playful guitar driven pop with retro and lo-fi elements and soaring toplines to create a youthful upbeat feeling, Sugerman’s debut single ‘i wanna kiss boys cos i’m bored’ introduced you into her world through tales of her struggles and triumphs in romance and growing up, and captured the humour and spirit of learning from her own experiences.
After the release, Lucy sold out a hometown single release showcase at The Abbey in Canberra in November, debuting her brand new four-piece band and previewed upcoming material.
As the 2020 recipient of the APRA AMCOS Women In Music Mentorship, Sugerman has also played live alongside Nicole Millar and Ali Barter, and has collaborated with Alex Lahey, Dustin Tebbutt, Dylan Nash and Joel Quatermain, and her vocals featured on LANKS single I'd Do It All Again as a part of his hotly anticipated double album ‘Spirits’.
‘colour blind’ is out now on all streaming services independently via Ditto, and is the second taste of a bunch of new music to come throughout the rest of 2021.
