ANNIE BASS RETURNS ANEW WITH ‘HOLD ON’

Singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Annie Bass marks her awaited return with new single ‘Hold On’ and a new outlook on life as a whole. Her first new music since her Control EP from early 2019, ‘Hold On’ is a journey into the deepest and darkest parts of an anxiety-fueled existence and an encouraging nudge towards accepting the things about ourselves we cannot change and gently guiding the things we can in the direction of our dreams. The single is accompanied by a mesmerising visual.
Standing on the edge of 2019 with high hopes and great expectations, Annie Bass found herself replacing excitement and joy with fear and dread. An obsession with information, “bettering” and “fixing” herself and a constant strive for perfection, eventually grew so heavy within Annie Bass that it was all too much to bear - something had to give. “I was so focussed on fixing myself that I forgot how to live my life.”
‘Hold On' was born from a place of freedom from the clutches of perfectionism. With her ego in the driver's seat, and her hands covering her eyes, Annie explains that if she didn’t learn to accept her own imperfections, both herself and her ego would crash and burn.
But I’ll destroy you
No one will mourn you
And then you’ll be gone, so
Baby hold on.
“‘Hold On’ is a conversation between me, and the darkest part of myself,” she explains. “I found relief when I started to look in the places I’d tried for so long to conceal, to fix, to be rid of. I had to find a way for these things to coexist. Soon enough I started to find joy, freedom, a lightness. I started to understand that there were parts of the darkness that I loved, parts that motivated and excited me.”
I am not your enemy
It’s just a tiny part of me wants everything
At any cost, whatever lost
On ‘Hold On’ Annie Bass has again teamed up with longtime collaborator and close friend Christopher Port. Following one too many pummels to the heart, Annie was all but ready to throw in the towel on her music career. “After one coffee with Chris, we had a plan set in motion. When we are making music together it is just so joyus. It's not often you find someone who you can work with so closely with. I owe him a lot, both as an artist and as a friend,” Annie reflects.
'Hold On’ begins with a single vocal note and a snare beat that builds layer upon layer. Mirroring the lyricism of the track, two voices can be heard - one precise and sharp, the other distorted and distant - both Annie Bass.
‘Hold On’ is Annie Bass’ re-emergence, rebirth and revelation. It’s an artist and a woman laying bare her darkest fears in order to get out of her own way.
