GENESIS OWUSU RETURNS WITH NEW REMIX & ALTERNATE VIDEO

After releasing his long-awaited debut album, Smiling With No Teeth, ARIA-nominated, Ghanaian-Australian artist Genesis Owusu is back today with a special remix and video for “Gold Chains”. Enlisting the masterful skill set of Melbourne’s Harvey Sutherland and self-taught digital artist, painter and heavy metal musician, Serwah Attafuah on visuals, today’s release lands in the midst of Owuwu’s Smiling With No Teeth Album Tour, which has seen sold out shows in Sydney, Brisbane, Canberra, Melbourne and Adelaide, and limited tickets remaining in select cities.

The avant-garde extraordinaire marks another musical offering to his already impressive catalogue with today’s “Gold Chains” remix. Reworked by machine funk synthesist, Harvey Sutherland, the beloved single receives an added dose of synth-led serenity into the amorphous track. Sutherland’s distinctive electronic soul and leftfield disco cuts accompanied by Genesis’ smooth melodies and lyrical integrity come together and further define Genesis Owusu as an artist with no genre boundaries, as he layers a futuristic dystopia into the tracks self-exploration of the artist as a product.

Reaching further heights, Owusu shares a visual accompaniment by 3D self-taught digital artist and musician Serwah Attafuah. The video presents a surreal cyber wasteland of blazing neon lights and underground matrixes of uncharted mysteries. The sci-fi inspired visuals mould a futuristic hybrid of animation and live-action, where 3D Genesis moves throughout a futuristic desert with the guidance of soulful melodies, interacting with robots, clones and hover-cars, whilst his real-world counterpart observes from afar.

Genesis says on the single and video: “I'm always aspiring to curate the sounds of the future and the sounds of the unknown. Harvey Sutherland has this certain charm about his work that somehow feels futuristic and reminiscent at the same time, so it felt more than right to enlist him to produce the Gold Chains Remix, especially after killing the production on Easy, an album favourite. This concept of futurism, Afrofuturism specifically, is what drew me in so deeply to Serwah Attafuah's work, a fellow Ghanaian-Australian artist. I'm so glad we finally got to work together on the music video for this ‘Gold Chains’ remix; her work is seriously next level.”

Today’s release arrives as the next chapter in Genesis’ highly acclaimed debut album, Smiling With No Teeth. Recently, Genesis gifted audiences an in-depth look behind the LP within his Beat x Beat episode, made in collaboration with Beats by Dre. Directed by Riley Blakeway (“The Other Black Dog and “Gold Chains”), Genesis takes audiences on his journey throughout Smiling With No Teeth, sharing an intimate account of how the record came to life. Featuring cameos from The Black Dog Band, including Kirin J Callinan, Touch Sensitive, Julian Sudek and his manager, producer and OURNESS label co-founder, Andrew Klippel, fans old and new come to learn about the artists complex identity and the implicit themes that have informed his most honest and expressive body of work to date.

Known for his unmatched stage presence, Genesis Owusu is currently touring Smiling With No Teeth around the country, showcasing the album in its most honest and passionate form. Stealing the spotlight with every lyric, Genesis has orchestrated a sea of energetic chaos in Sydney, Melbourne and Canberra venues. Forecasting stardom, as Sydney Morning Herald states “watching Owusu dazzle in an intimate venue feels like you’re getting a stolen glimpse of his star before it rises fully”, Adelaide, Brisbane, Sunshine Coast, Fremantle and Perth audiences will soon experience The Goon Club and Genesis Owusu in their most impressive show to date.

Smiling With No Teeth landed this March to critical acclaim, including covers with Acclaim, and NME Australia, feature album on triple j, FBi, Triple R and Radio Adelaide and praise from Rolling Stone, T Magazine, The Monthly, The Australian, ICON and many more. The first extended release since 2017’s debut Cardrive EP, Genesis has since collected two ARIA nominations, gained attention from tastemakers Sir Elton John & Anthony Fantano and featured across the country’s most iconic festival stages including Groovin’ the Moo, Spilt Milk, St. Jerome’s Laneway Festival, Splendour in the Grass, Field Day, Falls Festival and Meredith Music Festival. Making his Like A Version debut back in February, Genesis headed into the triple j studio to deliver a powerful rendition of Sex Pistol's anthem, "Anarchy In The UK", alongside the album's debut single, "Don't Need You".
