Melbourne-based multi-instrumentalist Boats, aka Blake Paterson, follows up the recent KEXP supported single ‘Falling Off Rainbows' with a new single and video for ‘Van Diemens Land’. Detailing Blake’s experience of becoming lost in the Tasmanian wilderness, the single is the second track lifted from the impending Time To Open The Machine EP, due for release on Monday 2 March.

Of the ‘“terrifying” experience which inspired the track, Blake says “Upon realising you're completely lost in the wilderness your memories flood in and your life flashes before your eyes. Despite this, Tasmania became a special place for me. The track celebrates the power and glory of Tasmania and the respect and humility that nature brings to us.”

Pieced together by Asha Madge, the accompanying music video traverses the Tasmanian landscape and mirrors the juxtaposition between the track’s verse and chorus, using contrasting imagery to highlight the stark separation between humans and the wild.

Following a successful five-date residency at The Tote in December, Boats will release his debut EP Time To Open The Machine on March 2. Produced by Simon Lam (Kllo, ills) and Andrew Szekeres (Midnight Juggernauts), the collection of tracks explores existential and dystopian trajectories. The release is accompanied by a four-piece illustration series by Ilya Milstein, which presents a visual interpretation of each track.
