Today, Melbourne's NEON PATTERN SUNDIAL (FKA Ben Alpine) releases the lush new single and video 'Winter'. The track is accompanied by the announcement of the project's upcoming debut EP One Moment Never Meant A Thing, out 4th December.
Honing in on the eclectic brand of alt-pop from previous singles, 'Winter' flows with tranquil energy through jittering electronica and colourful soundscapes, with tight multi-instrumentation and fleshed-out rhythms in the vein of The Japanese House and Tycho. With production from Marc Scollo (Jimmy Harwood) and mastering by Lachlan Carrick (A.B. Original, Ainslie Wills, Eilish Gilligan), the track propels into its groove, evolving into a transportive daydream of melancholy and introspection through blooming psychedelic tones.
While NEON PATTERN SUNDIAL entertains a collaborative approach in its production and instrumentation, Ben Rizio maintains an inward focus to his lyricism. Discussing the track's themes, Ben shares; 'I tried to keep the lyrics quite ambiguous and indirect, which honestly came from a place of shyness and not knowing how to write what I felt without fear of criticism. They paint with broad strokes a depression that you just want to be over. The concept is sad, but the sentiment is quite optimistic.'
The striking lyric visualiser arrives from the masterful editing of Juliet Bryant. Having helmed music videos for The Japanese House, Bryant has expertly captured the cool hues and captivating tones of 'Winter'.

NEON PATTERN SUNDIAL is the semi-collaborative project of Melbourne songwriter and producer Ben Rizio. From high school alternative band Echo Mono to forays into experimental SoundCloud electronica, Ben has been quietly prolific, shaping the direction of NEON PATTERN SUNDIAL through a combination of collaboration, solo endeavours and experimentation. Formerly releasing under the name Ben Alpine, NEON PATTERN SUNDIAL reflects the next phase of the project, with Ben stating; 'As I think more and more about where I see this project in the future, assigning it a single person's identity doesn’t make sense, and feels disingenuous to the process of the music. I don’t want this project to necessarily be a solo-project or a band, but to play on that line, and be open to embracing that fluidity in the future.'
Latest single 'Winter' arrives with the announcement of the debut EP One Moment Never Meant A Thing, out 4 December. Largely written independently by Ben, personal reflection and introspection are integral to his creative process, with the songs flourishing into a collaborative effort through the recording and production stages. Also featuring the glistening and vibrant introduction ‘All In Your Stride’ and the infectious psych-tinged sounds of ‘Wendouree’, the project contrasts sparkling energy with meditative ambiance, showcasing Ben’s gifted ability to craft colourful and thoughtful alt-pop which is both earnest and transportive.
